At Carruthers & Jackson we define data literacy as:
“The ability to read, work with, analyse, and argue with data.”
Data literacy skills empower people at all levels to ask the right questions of data, understand it’s value, develop their knowledge, make better decisions, and communicate its meaning to others.
Data literacy is about equipping people with the knowledge and skills to ‘act’ on data. Data is an asset, but value can only be realised if people are both capable and confident to, read, work with, analyse, argue, and communicate it.
The development of data literacy is an organisation-wide endeavour and must engage all levels. A data-enabled organisation is the product of collaborative and well organised data-literate teams, comprised of engaged and skilled data-literate people.
